How to block Twitch ads

The simplest way is an extension built for Twitch, like Nodo: during the commercial break it shows the stream itself instead of the ad, with no account and no setup. Regular ad blockers rarely catch these ads, because Twitch puts them inside the video. You can also pay for Turbo or subscribe to the channel.

How to remove the ads with Nodo

  1. Install Nodo from your browser's store: the Chrome Web Store (Chrome, Edge, Brave and Opera) or Firefox Add-ons.
  2. Open a stream on Twitch. It works right away, with no account.
  3. In your first days after installing, ad breaks play in HD, just like Pro. After that, the stream keeps playing in 360p instead of the ad and goes back to your quality when the break ends.
  4. If you want the quality to stay up during breaks, subscribe to Nodo Pro.

Why regular ad blockers don't work on Twitch

Most sites load the ad from a separate ad server, and the blocker cuts that address. Twitch does it differently: it stitches the ad into the stream's own video, on the same address as the broadcast.

With no separate address to cut, a regular block list, like uBlock Origin's, has nothing to stop. That's why you need a tool that understands Twitch's video and knows how to swap out the ad segment.

The ways to watch without ads, compared

Each route has a different cost. None of them is wrong: it depends on how much you watch and how you want to support the streamer.

Twitch Turbo
Twitch's official subscription removes ads on every channel, in the apps too. It's the official route, but it's billed separately and costs much more than an extension. Check the current price on Twitch.
Channel subscription
Subscribing to a channel usually removes its ads and supports the streamer directly. It only covers that channel.
uBlock Origin lists and scripts
They work as long as someone in the community updates the script every time Twitch changes. They take manual setup and can stop without warning.
Other Twitch extensions
There are several, with different approaches. Some ask you to set up a proxy or depend on servers run by volunteers. Before installing, read the recent reviews in the store.
Nodo
Free with no account: during breaks, the stream keeps playing in 360p instead of the ad (in HD during your first days). Nodo Pro, at US$ 2.99 a month by card, keeps the quality you picked. We test it every day on a real stream and publish the result on the status page.

Does it work on every channel, every time?

On the vast majority of channels, yes. Twitch changes how it shows ads from time to time; when that happens, we adjust Nodo on our side. Now and then an ad may still get through, mostly on channels that run their own ads.

Want to support a streamer? Nodo lets you allow a channel: on that channel, ads show up as usual.

Frequently asked questions

Can I block Twitch ads for free?
Yes. Nodo is free and needs no account: during the commercial break, the stream keeps playing instead of the ad (in 360p after your first days in HD) and goes back to your quality when the break ends.
Does uBlock Origin block Twitch ads?
On its own, rarely. Twitch puts the ad inside the stream's video, and regular block lists have no separate address to cut. Extra scripts can help, but they depend on manual updates.
Do I need a Twitch or Nodo account?
No. Nodo works with no account and never asks for your Twitch login, email or password. A Nodo account is only needed for Pro.
Does it work on mobile?
No. Nodo is for desktop browsers: Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera and Firefox. The Twitch mobile apps don't accept extensions.
Is Nodo safe?
The free mode handles the break inside your browser, without going through our servers. On Pro, only the requests that control the stream go through Nodo's network exit, encrypted; the video itself comes straight from Twitch. The "Is Nodo safe?" page explains every permission.
